WMRC’s Symposium Relaunched to Celebrate 75th Anniversary & Honor Late Director Tony Orme

White Mountain Research Center has a long history of publishing symposium volumes focusing on important science produced at WMRC and in the surrounding area; many of the past volumes were edited by Clarence Hall and Victoria Doyle-Jones along with other colleagues.  We are reviving the tradition in celebration of 75 years of science at WMRC— did you know that WMRC is older than a number of University of California campuses?

Spearheaded by Dr. Amalie Orme and Dr. Jeff Holmquist, this year’s volume will feature a broad array of disciplines, ranging from astrophysics to ecology, and includes contributions from investigators with decades of research in the area as well as early-career researchers.  We have chosen a “lightning paper” format for this year’s online volume, and articles are designed to be short and engaging.  We are excited to be producing the open-access volume, and we think that you will find it compelling; look for it on our website in late 2025.

This year’s volume is dedicated to the memory of former WMRC Director Tony Orme, who passed in May, 2020.  Tony was instrumental, along with current Director Glen MacDonald, in shepherding WMRC through a difficult transition period during 2012-13.  It would not be an exaggeration to state that Tony saved WMRC, and he did so via a tremendous effort.  All the more remarkable is that Tony took on this task after he had initially retired from 46 years as an accomplished UCLA professor of geography.  We are greatly indebted to Tony, and we think that this dedication is particularly appropriate, because he had been eager to see the symposium series revived.  We hope that he would be pleased.
