Some fundamentally important questions concerning wildlife population biology can only be researched with long-term data sets, because each year is but a single data point. Early in my career, I came to understand the need for such data sets. I have now devoted five decades to the development of such data sets on bighorn sheep populations in California, including the White Mountains. While most research projects have a time perspective of 2-5 years, my research time frame has been in units of decades. I will discuss the challenges of engaging in such long term research and share some products of that research. – John D. Wehausen, Ph.D., retired WMRC research scientist.
